Verdict of the Week

John Sergeant Quits Strictly Come Dancing

The news that John Sergeant has quit Strictly Come Dancing has angered some people and appeased others. Obviously eCourt respects John's decision to leave the show if he was no longer enjoying it or if there were some underlying personal reasons not revealed in the press conference.

The argument against John staying in the show was that he was depriving a better dancing from staying on the show. This may have been true, but what is the point of giving the public the vote if you are not going to respect it. It's the equivalent of allowing people to vote for whichever political party they want but then complaining about who gets into power.

First and foremost, it is a public driven Saturday night entertainment show, just like the X Factor or any of these shows. The fact that Strictly is set against a backdrop of a dance competition is almost secondary. The fact is that the whole appeal of the show is that it allows the public to choose who it wants to see next week. If you deny the public that right, you are robbing them of half the fun of the show.

This is no small matter for shows like these and his decision could have a serious backlash against the show. Many people ring up every week and spend their hard earned money in support of John Sergeant and many of them will feel betrayed by this manoeuvre.

If eCourt had been asked to deliver a verdict on this matter, we would have come to the opinion that John should have respected the public vote and should not have quit the show.
