Verdict of the Week

Ireland's EU Treaty Vote

The people of Ireland have voted resounding against the EU Treaty. They had had enough of the Brussels gravy train and decided that it was time for it to be de-railed. They said no to losing their sovereignty; they said no to losing their democratic rights as a nation; and they said no to a European Superstate; they said no to having anything to do with this corrupt and out of control monster that rampages across Europe devouring democracy as if it were an hors-d'oeuvre.

What is really significant about this vote is the fact that the people of Ireland have probably benefited more from the EU than any other nation in the union and yet they still rejected it. Under the EU's own rules this makes the Lisbon Treaty dead in the water. But instead of accepting that, the Brussels bureaucrats simply ignore it and suggest that Ireland just keeps on voting until they get it right!

The eCourt Verdict on this is a simple one: It is a dangerous sham. To disregards this is to dispense with democracy, which is the cornerstone of our society. The EU ignores its own rules but punishes us if we ignore theirs. This is despotic tyranny akin to military dictatorship. Ireland voted with their hearts and with their minds and Gordon Brown should be wary of depriving the English voters of being able to do the same.
